I think children especially find them easier to control while they are learning to coat toast, bagels, or even cakes. The plastic handle can be left in water or the dishwasher, thus making this easier care than the wooden-handled LL Bean or Vermont model that my mother has used for years. The smooth side separates cream cheese without tearing the foil wrapping. The serrated side cuts bread and in a pinch cheese or apples. After using one in the kitchen for a year, I bought another for permanent use in the camping box.
