I have always had good experiences with Krups, Kitchen Aid, Braun, and Cuisinart products-- in that order. At home, we really enjoy and have had great experiences and reliability from the first two brands in particular.
Many of today's toasters seem more like small ovens, given the amount of wattage output they can deliver. In the case of the toaster, I chose the Krups 4-slice toaster. (The Kitchen Aid was a bit too long for the small amount of counter space that I have in my apartment's kitchen). Both have very wide slots, seemingly designed for bagels and frozen breakfast treats.
I noted that some reviewers had complained that the Krups does not toast evenly. I have used a number of brand name toasters, and one could say the same for all-- especially those with the wider slots.
What I do like about the Krups is that it does do a great job in positioning and holding bread evenly between the heating elements in each slot, which in turn is helpful in evenly toasted bread. Whether the toasting is even depends, I found, on the freshness and size of the bread; also, you should experiment with the heat settings, to determine which is best for you. Larger loaf sizes will bend slightly to one side or the other in the slots; hence, I do not always obtain even toasting of these bread slices.
I am very satisfied with the results that I obtain from the Krups toaster, and recommend it without reservation.

(More customer reviews)After having gone through several toasters that looked sleek, but couldn't toast worth a darn -- let alone set off the smoke alarm -- I turned to Consumer Products for guidance (11/04). We picked their number 2 because it looked functional without too many needless gimmicks, whereas the brand name of #1 reminded us too much of the toaster that burnt the bread and toasted its electronics. Also, rather than spending over ten bucks on a "Small Applicance Contract", we tossed in three more bucks to get the number-four-rated toaster as a backup should the Krups ever fail. The toaster yields a nice evenly browned slice of bread or toaster waffle without beeping, dancing or burning up the kitchen. Sorry to learn that others encountered uneven browning -- we are delighted with the Krups, and it looks good too.

(More customer reviews)KitchenAid hurts its brand name for each day this product is on the market. Here's the good news: The soft rise feature seems to work well for me; toast is easy to remove. The bagel function works well for bagels and hamburger buns. I have to change the darkness setting for different bread types (sandwich slices, buns, bagels, etc.), but I expect that, so it's ok. The digital setting knob is convenient because you don't have to guesstimate the correct setting. The bad news: The thing won't toast consistently. Almost every day, I wake up and load the toaster with two refrigerated bagels (4 sliced halves). It's always a cold start in the morning. I set it to brown on #6. The results range from moderately overdone to no browning at all. There's no excuse for it. As another reviewer has said, it also doesn't cook very evenly with 1 or 3 slices. Evidently, the radiant heat from the opposite side hits only one edge of the single slice and overcooks just that side. If you stick a single slice in the center of the slot, it gets even worse, because both edges will be overdone, while the center is underdone. I have to turn the toaster down one notch if I plan on running a second batch of toast. The Even-Heat System is bogus. I give this toaster an A for effort and an F for execution.

Rival 2-Slice Toaster - White Review

(More customer reviews)After 25+ years my cheap old Black & Decker toaster died, so I was looking for another simple basic toaster that cost little, at least until I could look at all the reviews and choose the right toaster for my needs, I decided to take a chance on this cheap Rival, I've been using it every day for about 6 months... it works OK, does the job I need for standard bread and English muffins, I've not tried bagels but this does NOT have a bagel setting so I'm guessing it will not be good for those... this is called "cool touch" and it is, but if you're careless you can still burn yourself, but there is a toast "lifter" that should make toast easier to remove.

It has wide slots that adjust for thick English muffins to normal sandwich bread, and has a simple "toast shade" control, but you have to learn to set this properly for normal bread versus English muffins (muffins are set about twice the setting used for sandwich bread)... there is a "cancel" button that has always worked for me when I forgot and left the toast shade control too dark, the manual warns to use this "cancel" button instead of just lifting the "toast lever" since lifting it may damage the device... bread is "almost" evenly toasted, though one end of English muffins are always toasted a bit darker than the other end, but it's acceptable for my needs... has removable crumb tray that's easy to clean.

This is a simple basic toaster that costs little, so if your needs are simple this might work for you, however there is one problem for me, most of the bread I buy is just over 5 inches long, and I've always been able to toast it with no problems using my old toaster, but the "bread slot" on this toaster is just LESS than 5 inches, which means my bread will not fit unless I cut off about .25 inch, this is mostly a nuisance but I'm looking for another toaster that will accept my regular bread length... for the low price this toaster does an OK job for many people, though there are definite things lacking if you need more features.

This little warming rack has given me perfect results with products ranging from frozen hot dog buns to left over pizza (after a quick heating in the micro to remelt the cheese, the warming rack took the sogginess out of the crust).
I highly recomend this product. It isn't a toaster oven; it is an useful kitchen tool for me.

(More customer reviews)I just got this toaster a month ago and I like it a lot. To be fair, I don't toast things every day but I have not had any cause for complaint yet. Put bread in, it toasts it evenly and you take bread out.
I think many people who like "artisan" bread will like this toaster because it does a couple of things that make weird size slices toast well. First, it has nice wide toast holders that can fit longer and thicker pieces of bread. It also has a pop height adjuster that can make it easier to get out those shorter slices. I can't find another toaster for the price that lets you toast this type of bread easily.
If you don't slice or eat specialty breads, you might not want to spend this much unless it is a good match for your decor. It still does toast regular store-bought bread well though. I also had good success with English muffins and bagels although I had to use a higher temperature setting to make it a one pop deal.

I can honestly say that we went through more than 10 toasters of various prices - high and low - half of them made unacceptable toast - and half of them broke while making unacceptable toast - and then we found the Dualit. This was about 5 years ago - in a true panic, I thought I would just go out and buy the most expensive toaster there was - and found this one at williams-sonoma. Sticker shock, but I've recommended it since, to everyone who toasts. And it has made perfect toast since the day we bought it.
It's great - it is really easy to clean. There is no relying on electronics to decide how toasted the bread is - you figure it out and you know forever - about 2 minutes for a piece of toast for wheat bread from the fridge into cold toaster - if second round of toast and toaster is hot, cut it by 25%. The little ticking sound while it's fixing your perfect toast is nice to keep you remembering that you have toast - and when the ticking stops (no cha-ching), you know you are ready.
I have zero regrets and hundreds of absolutely perfect toasting experiences. And we paid full price - this was before amazon got into this market. Dualit is the best toaster in the world -and me? - I am the toaster queen.

Dualit 4-Slice Toaster Review

(More customer reviews)I have mixed feelings about this item. So much so that I put off reviewing it for a long time. I've owned mine over a year now, and it is time to speak up.
On the one hand, I really want to like it. And not just because I spent a good sized hunk of cash on it. I like the idea of an industrial, commercial-grade toaster that makes great toast, is indestructible, and looks great doing it.
On the other hand, I kind of don't like it. It takes up a lot of space, the slots aren't wide enough for a bagel, or deep enough for a wide piece of bread. I had to buy the optional sandwich cages to allow me to stuff bread into the slots that wouldn't otherwise fit. It needs to be preheated, and even after it is, the toast is inconsistent and uneven.
It does look great on the counter, and feels very heavy-duty. But, it just isn't very good at making toast, and that is supposed to be the point.
Sadly, I don't think I would buy this again.

(More customer reviews)I have owned this toaster for about two months now and am very pleased with the toast I get from it. It seems to be almost impossible to find a toaster these days that will toast bread evenly and consistently. This one not only does the job, but is also reasonably priced.
I have used the "bagel" setting for English muffins and it works well, toasting just the inside surface of the muffin while warming the crust side. Bread is evenly toasted on both sides. It doesn't matter which slot I use, the toast is consistently the same degree of "brown." Each pair of slots has its own set of controls, so you can toast to different degrees of "brown" at the same time. The "frozen" setting works with frozen bread as it should. In short, this toaster does exactly what it's supposed to.
I have only two criticisms. First, it takes a long time to get the job done. That is ameliorated somewhat by the fact that there are four slots, making it twice as fast as a two-slot toaster. To toast bread to a medium-brown takes about 3:30 (minutes:seconds) on setting number five. The settings go to six, which yields a smoking, almost black, piece of toast after 4:30. If you want your toast truly black, you'll have to use the "frozen" setting.
My other criticism is its size. Check the dimensions and make sure that you can live with them. This toaster is large.
Edit: I have found one more criticism, but it still doesn't affect my opinion that this is an excellent toaster. When the toast pops up, it isn't raised high enough. The toaster will allow you to lift the toast another half-inch or so, but unless you are toasting a full-sized piece of bread (think English muffin) you will not be able to reach it without a tool. This is an annoyance, but I just stab the muffin with my butter knife and pull it out.
All in all, an excellent toaster. I'd buy it again.

(More customer reviews)I am not a toast expert that many seem to be regarding reviews. All I wanted was a toaster that did a good job. First tried a Dualit ($108), and returned it since many of the elements either with not heating equally, or were not lit up at all. Then I tried just a two-slice Kitchen Aid ($70). It worked OK, but the housing was so big, there was almost 2 inches from the front of the toaster to the edge of the toast opening. I returned it too, really wanting a 4 slice. I took a chance on the Sunbeam, have had it for about 3 months, and it toasts very good. I found it toasted the edges better when you laid the bread down, rather than standing it up. I have not tried the bagel option yet. It has consistently toasted the bread the same each time at the same setting. I have been setting it at 4.5. I also like the "interrupt" button just below the setting knob. Just a light touch pops the toast up. I had a previous toaster where I had to push very hard to make it work (sometimes!)

-Consistent Results.
If your partner likes their bagel lightly toasted, and you like yours golden brown, you can both get what you want without any guesswork.
-Digital Readout
There is a digital readout that gives you unambiguous feedback. You can see at all times what darkness you have the toaster set to. It also gives you a little count-down timer so you know how long you have left.
-Cancel button.
You don't have to pry at the handle to cancel your toast. Of course, since you get consistent results, you probably don't have to cancel that often.
-Toast-popup.
If you do pull the handle up, your toast comes up for you to look at it without having to cancel the toasting. Just let go, and the toast drops back down to continue the cycle.
-Audio feedback
It beeps when your toast is done. Sometimes the pop-up sound can be lost over the sound of the coffee machine. The beep is much easier to hear.
-More options I don't use.
There are some more buttons in the front that I've not had to use. Defrost and warm, I think.
I'm very pleased with my new toaster. I like over-engineered devices- devices where someone has thought of nearly everything and found an elegant solution. This toaster doesn't disappoint.
Update, Aug 14, 2009:
After two years of use this toaster is still going strong.

Oster 6307 Inspire 2-Slice Toaster, Red Review

The control buttons (one of the reasons why we bought it) are not functioning, neither is the darkness control knob. Once it's put into the toast position, it does not shut off, you have to push up the lever manually. My son put in some Toaster Swirls only to set off the smoke alarm. This is the second time a product (a rice cooker)from this brand has broken within months of purchase. I'm just going to avoid Oster at all costs in the future.

(More customer reviews)I thought this was going to be the perfect toaster. However, once again a toaster misses the mark.
I particularly like the countdown timer, because I always wonder how much longer it will take to toast my bread, but it would be nice if the counters only lit up when the toast control is pushed down. They do make nice night lights in the kitchen, though.
Deficiencies:
1. The slots are wide, but they are short, so thick bread will go in just fine, but not some wider bread types. 12 grain breads in particular tend to be wider, and the slices end up caught on the ends of the slots.
2. The first thing I noticed was that the center elements of the toaster did not get as red as the outside elements. Thus I was worried that the bread would toast darker one side than the other, and that was the case.
3. One side (2 slots) of the toaster refused to work on the third attempt. It would not latch down.
4. I had to set the control to 5.5 (the highest setting is 6) to toast multigrain bread to a medium color. I would guess that a setting of 1 or 2 would just slightly warm the bread.
This toaster seems to be optimized for bagels. I want a toaster that is optimized for toast!
When I was a kid, we had toasters that went tick tick tick, toasted the bread just right and then dinged, and didn't cost much. Why can no one make a decent toaster like that now?

(More customer reviews)I don't think there's a toaster made that is perfect for everyones taste. For years I'd use a toaster oven with a toast timed setting because I could not only do more than two slices, but I could usually get even browning. Now I have this, and have had it for nearly two years. I bought it here on the Zon. One of those kitchen specials they frequently have giving me a good price overall.
The problem with toasters is that not only do some of them vary because of cheaply made or defective thermostats (trust me you ain't paying for a furnace quality control here), but because of the bread. The key to toaster is know your bread. Standard Sunbeam or Wonder bread needs about a 3 on this thing, premium breads do well at 3.5, muffins using the bagel button and so on. Your's may toast a bit different. Realize the science of toasting has to do with both the moisture and fat content of the bread or bagel, or muffing being toasted.
Dry Bialy bread has little fat content and little moisture but takes a 5 or six to get it toasted. Dry grocery store brand standard white will toast using a 1.5 to two setting. It has fat content and no water, probably the best combo to get a fast toast browning. You will also see a big difference in one or two slices, since the overall heat goes up in the toaster a lower setting is typically needed when doing two slices at once.
For features this has a number of simple but useful items. The slide out crumb tray in the back makes for easy cleaning. The button array contains not only the standard toast setting, but settings for defrost and reheat. This helps overcome the problem with stand alone toasters. You need to remember to dial down a little on repeated toastings. My toaster oven used to sense what temperature it was and then adjust the toast time, even though the setting never changed. I know that because it had a digital time readout. It first confused me when I did repeated toastings and the time would decline by maybe fifty percent or more. I noticed later that it always had the same time when cool and much less when it was warmed up. Toasters typically don't do that, so you must. There is also a bagel button which works well on English muffins too.
Additionally I like the feature that allows you to "pull up" on the set bar to remove "short" slices of bread after toasting. One of the old household dangers of toast was people putting in metal knives to remove toast, and getting shocked. Here you just raise it up, and then pluck it out. I toast almost daily, so this has held up two years without any complaints, so I'd say its durable. It comes in colors, but I like the all stainless model, it shines up so nice.
