Krups FEM4B 4-Slice Toaster, Black Review

Krups FEM4B 4-Slice Toaster, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read previous reviews of this and other toasters that I had considered purchasing. I have always had good experiences with Krups, Kitchen Aid, Braun, and Cuisinart products-- in that order. At home, we really enjoy and have had great experiences and reliability from the first two brands in particular.
Many of today's toasters seem more like small ovens, given the amount of wattage output they can deliver. In the case of the toaster, I chose the Krups 4-slice toaster. (The Kitchen Aid was a bit too long for the small amount of counter space that I have in my apartment's kitchen). Both have very wide slots, seemingly designed for bagels and frozen breakfast treats.
I noted that some reviewers had complained that the Krups does not toast evenly. I have used a number of brand name toasters, and one could say the same for all-- especially those with the wider slots.
What I do like about the Krups is that it does do a great job in positioning and holding bread evenly between the heating elements in each slot, which in turn is helpful in evenly toasted bread. Whether the toasting is even depends, I found, on the freshness and size of the bread; also, you should experiment with the heat settings, to determine which is best for you. Larger loaf sizes will bend slightly to one side or the other in the slots; hence, I do not always obtain even toasting of these bread slices.
I am very satisfied with the results that I obtain from the Krups toaster, and recommend it without reservation.

The Krups 4 slice toaster has 1600 watts of power and two independent sets of controls. Each chamber is designed to quickly brown the surface of the bread and retain the soft texture within. The integrated warming tray is easy to clean, removable and dishwasher safe. It quickly warms breads, muffins, pastries, and other baked goods without drying them out. The 8- setting browning selector accommodates all toasting preferences accurately and consistently at all levels. The 3- position metal control lever turns right to toast and left to raise the bread for easy one- handed removal.Bagel function toasts bagels from the cut side while warming the crust while the defrost function warms frozen bread through then toasts. The stop eject button halts the toasting cycle at the touch of a button. Comes with 1-year warranty.

We've been wanting one of these for ages but the price (400.00) had been way too prohibitive, so to get this for less than half was a deal we could not pass up. It's a wonderful addition to our kitchen. It's beautiful and functional. So far we've made cookies and hamburger buns and it's unbelievable how easy this makes the whole baking process. I will actually bake more now.

I received this mixer yesterday for Christmas from my kids. Then I read the above review and I got a little aprehensive. Today I telephoned this number 1-800-541-6390 to ask about the attachments for this model mixer. She answered several questions and she gave me the numbers of appliance models that are compatible with the K4SS mixer. The wire whip model number is K5AW. The attachments with model numbers KSM500 and K5SS will all fit the K4SS mixer. Hope this helps.

Viking Range White Stand Mixer 7 Qt. Review

Viking Range White Stand Mixer 7 Qt.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The machine died after 3 months. I am just starting to bake and was enjoying it until I taxed the Viking with bread making - not multiple loaves but just one at a time. It died very silently - no smoke or ozone/burnt motor odor - just quietly died while making cream icing with cream cheese and cream. I hit the reverse and it just started to make a gurgling noise and then was no more.
I called the company - not really the company but a repair facility in Detroit and was told the best they could do was to mail me a FedEx slip and I was responsible for boxing the unit and they would repair it.
When I suggested that they send me a box or another motor unit (I would send the current unit back) I was informed that this was not company policy. When I attempted to call Viking and when I asked to speak to corporate customer service I was directed back to the repair facility in Detroit - this happened over and over.
I mentioned that I bought the unit retail on the website they still insisted that they couldn't help me.
Cooks illustrated rated the Kitchen Aid Professional 600 as their number one choice - the Viking did not even make it into the first three best choices - I strongly agree. The Viking is more expensive and the service is lacking. And more importantly the maching is inferior.
I am considering the Hobart or the Kitchen Aid and I will keep the Viking as backup. When you buy a mixer get it from a department store that offers guarantees that include replacement units. I am going to the Sears website now.

One thousand watts of power and planetary mixing action ensure supremely efficient mixing and beating. Not only can this heavy duty stand mixer knead even the toughest whole grain bread dough into submission, it also has a sufficient range of settings, allowing it to tenderly beat a meringue. Locking pop up heads make clean up snap. A special stirring speed helps prevent flour pouf, and liquid splatter during the initial mixing stage. Max speed is engineered for whipping custards, cream, and meringues - in other words when you want to incorporate maximum air. There are numerous attachments available for this unit to increase its multi-tasking capabilities. If you've become a fan of Viking's reliability, quality and style, no doubt this stand mixer would be a most welcome addition to your kitchen.

Hamilton Beach 64695N Power Deluxe 6-Speed Hand/St Review

Hamilton Beach 64695N Power Deluxe 6-Speed Hand/St
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this set for over a year now and couldn't be more unhappy with it. The mixer does not reach the bottom of the glass bowl so regardless you still have to mix by hand to get all the flour and other ingredients off the bottom of the bowl. The mixer gets bogged down easily and between speeds of 3 and 4 it just stops. There's apparently a short between those speeds but if you giggle the switch it will work again.
The bowl is extremely heavy glass so once you've mixed your ingredients it's very difficult to man-handle the bowl to tilt it to get the ingredients poured in your pans. The beaters come out while mixing. I've pushed and pushed them in but once you lift the head the beaters often stay in the bowl. Not every time but enough that it's aggravating to have to dig your beaters out of wet cake mix.
I don't have a recommendation for something better. I'll keep using this one because I just can't afford another one. But I do recommend you pass on this one and find better luck with another brand.

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKG25H0XWH 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been doing a lot of research on KitchenAid Mixers. Below is some information I felt may be of use to others trying to decide on a new KitchenAid Mixer.
If you have questions regarding a KitchenAid Mixer or other KitchenAid product, the KitchenAid Forums are a good place to start. The questions are answered by users and KitchenAid Employees. KitchenAid Employees will have "KitchenAid" in front of their name ex. "KitchenAid_Sally"
To find the forums go to the KitchenAid Website, select "Customer Service" at the top, then select "Join KitchenAid Conversations" at the bottom of the page, then select "View all topics". There is a forum just for Stand Mixers. You can also try this address: forum.kitchenaid.com. You will find instructional videos and information on model numbers, accessories, features, adjustments, etc. There are user tips and recipes too. You must sign up for the forums to submit a question.
Is a standard model like the Artisan all I need?
The Artisan is good for basic mixing jobs (light bread doughs, single batches, etc). It is also easier to move around and store in a cabinet due to its size compared to a pro model. So, if you don't plan on doing any mixing beyond the basics in single batches and or need something compact that can be more easily moved around, the Artisan may be a good choice.

Why Go Pro?

The pro models have bigger motors, all-steel gears, and a more durable build that can handle large (double +) batches, heavy bread doughs, and certain attachments that could cause non-pro models to bog down and overheat while mixing or strip their plastic gears. The PowerKnead(tm) spiral dough hook is not recommended for non-pro models. The "Heavy Duty" features of the pro models do add some extra weight and noise. The pro models are bowl-lift which means the bowl moves up and down, but the mix head is fixed. This can be an advantage if you leave the mixer on the counter under a cabinet. The mixer can be operated from where you place it. A tilt-head may not have enough clearance when tilted up, and it might be more difficult to operate without moving the mixer.
What's the difference? Pro HD, Pro 5+ and Pro 600
The differece between the KG25 (Professional HD) and the similar KV25 (Professional 5 Plus Series), is basically just the mixing bowl design. The KG25 has a narrower and taller bowl then the KV25. The KV25 has the newer wide bowl design which is the same width as the 6qt bowl on the Pro 600 just not as deep. Other then that, there is not much difference. The Pro 600 is the Pro 5+ with a bigger motor and bowl. The Pro 600 and Pro 5 plus can even share bowls. They all share internal parts, so they should be equal as far as build quality. For more parts info, you can go to PartSelect and lookup Whirpool model KG25H-4 (Kitchenaid is a division of Whirlpool). Many of the parts are cross referenced as the same parts for the 5 plus, Pro HD and Pro 600. The site also provides the service schematics.
Personal Choice
I originally ordered the RKG25H0XWH, but I then decided on the Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKV25G0XWW Professional 5 Plus Bowl Lift Stand Mixer, White on White for an extra $40. Basically I chose the KV25 for the wider bowl, a little broader selection of attachments, and the ability to use the 6qt bowl from the Pro 600. KA has released a 3qt bowl and whip combo(KN3CW)that fits the KG25/KV25/Pro600 - Note: this item is currently only available through William Sonoma. When I got mine I had to ask for it. There was no display in the store. Do a search for "combi" to find it on the website. The KG25 CAN NOT use the 5 or 6 quart bowls that fit the KV25 and Pro600.

West Bend 12-Speed Stand Mixers with 2 Mixing Bowls Review

West Bend 12-Speed Stand Mixers with 2 Mixing Bowls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned and used several different mixers, including the expensive one which I gave away because I didn't like it at all. Another Famous Brand I owned was so lightweight, it would move around on the counter while in use and would not turn the bowl, therefore, I had to stand there and continously scrape the bowl.
I am only giving the West Bend 41135 four stars because it is not perfect but it does come close! The bowl turns, there is room to add ingredients without stopping the motor, and raising the beaters, it is heavy enough to stay in place, it can be used as a hand mixer, and it has all the speeds anyone could want or need. If the mfg. had just color coded the beaters and the holes they belong in, they could be inserted quickly and easily. But that is no big deal--only a minor thing. I have color coded them myself so now, it is my dream machine! I am a proud and happy owner of this West Bend mixer.

Equipped with a powerful motor and 12 easy-to-set speeds, this convenient stand mixer can handle any mixing task. Knead dough or stir ingredients on the lower speeds, smooth batters or mash potatoes on the medium speeds, and whip cream or prepare frosting on the highest speeds. An electronic sensor detects how large the quantities are and adjusts the speed up or down automatically to accommodate larger or smaller loads. The mixer comes with a 1-1/2-quart and a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, which rotate on the mixer’s turntable during operation for more even blending. Two heavy-duty dough hooks also come included for making bread, along with two beaters, which, thanks to their large size, leave little batter on the sides of the bowl to scrape down. Other highlights include a two-position bowl rest, a top handle, and a release button that ejects the beaters or hooks. Dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap and a handy mixing guide comes included. The 300-watt stand mixer measures 12-2/5 by 10-4/5 by 14-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KEMS378SSS 27 Microwave Combination Wall Oven - Stainless Steel Review

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KEMS378SSS 27 Microwave Combination Wall Oven - Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this in March of 2009. It came with the following:Turntable, Convection grid, Crisper pan & handle, baking tray and steamer vessel.
There are so many features in here that I don't think I've used everything.
First, the Convection Microwave Oven:
De-Frost - I'm not a big menu planner so defrosting before I cook has to work quickly and efficiently for me. Apart from the usual cooking power options (High 100%, 90%, 80% etc) I can choose from Meats, Poultry, Fish, Bread, Juice & Manual. The microwave calculates the defrosting time based on the weight that I input. The manual has guidelines and pound to kilogram conversions.
Re-Heat - The options include Dinner Plate, Sauce, Soup, Pizza, Casserole, Beverage and Manual. The microwave bases the reheating on how many cups of sauce/soup/casserole/beverage is inputed and the number of slices of pizza. For example, I want to heat a cup of coffee. (Ghastly to some, I know, but I've done it) The microwave will ask you how many cups and whether you want it warm or hot. Simple & easy.
Manual Cooking - Just input the cooking power and the cooking time and you're all set!
Popcorn - Works like in other microwave ovens. Pop it based on the bag size.
Steam Cooking - The vessel comes in 3 parts: the cover, the food holder and the water container and they all fit together. I've steamed fresh vegetables, frozen vegetables and a lot of dim sum. They've all been delicious. The options are Potatoes, Fresh Vegetables, Frozen Vegetables, Fish fillets, Shrimp & Manual. Again, the microwave calculates the cooking times on how many cups and how many ounces. The steaming vessel is dishwasher safe.
Soften/Melt - The options are Butter, Margarine, Ice Cream, Cream cheese and the softening/melting time is based on how many sticks and ounces you have. We love to bake and we have a fondness for ice cream cakes so this has been so useful.
Crisper Pan Frying - This is the one feature that I've only tried a couple of times. I still like to use the old frying pan, I'll admit. I followed the guide in the manual and made an omelet.
Timer - I use this mostly when I'm making pasta on the stove top. I can have this running while the oven is cooking something else.
The Microwave converts to a Convection oven/Easy Convect. I just put the grid on the turntable. I've done smaller amounts of cookies, some chicken, baked potatoes and french fries this way.
The bottom part of this oven is the Electric Convection Oven. In "traditional" oven mode I can choose from Bake, Broil & Bread Proof. In convection mode, there's Bake, Broil & Roast. Just to give me something else to think about there's also an EasyConvect option. There's also the Options key that does the fahreinheit & celsius conversion, turns the sound on/off/high/low, dehydrates, oven temperature calibration, Sabbath mode and turn the turntable on/off.
To clean, I turn on the Self Clean Mode, choose the number of hours I want and wipe down when it's cool. The manual advises against using commercial oven cleaners.
Again, so many features. The bottom line is I've been very happy with this oven. It replaced an ancient GE that came with our house. A lot of thought went into this purchase since we also had to hire someone to chip away at a brick wall that also housed a fireplace that we wanted to keep. I chose this oven because of the brand, the stainless steel, its size & features and because I wanted the microwave oven off my counter. Notice that I mention the manual quite a bit. It has a lot of information!
Highly recommended.

KitchenAid 2-Slice, Two-Slot Toaster Review

KitchenAid 2-Slice, Two-Slot Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the only toaster on the market that has a differential heating button (hotter on the inside heaters, lesser on the outside heaters) to be used only for bagels. The cut side of the bagel (inside) will toast nicely, whereas the uncut side (outside) will only warm. The bagel comes out perfect, not rock hard which is often the case when it's been toasted on both sides.
My only disappointment with this toaster is how it toasts regular white bread/English Muffins. Since the bread is thin, it is held too far away from the heating elements, and it usually takes two attempts to get the bread actually toasted to anything more than just a light brown. If you want your toast darker, you'll have to adjust your setting, and then toast again.
If you are looking for a superb toaster for your bagels, this is the one for you. But if you don't eat toasted bagels that often, you would be better off with a more traditional toaster, without the extra wide slats.

KitchenAid GMA Grain Mill Attachment for Stand Mixers Review

KitchenAid GMA Grain Mill Attachment for Stand Mixers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This attachment reveals a design flaw in the Kitchenaid Mixer design. Inside every Kitchenaid Mixer you have a transmission/gearbox that drive both the mixer and the accessory drive shaft. This gearbox has a PLASTIC cover that holds all the gears in place.
The grain mill attachment places the *most* stress on your kitchenaid, more than any other attachment you can buy. What happens is when you're grinding wheat, it heats up that gearbox and the plastic cover starts to flex, and if you run it more than 10 minutes it'll heat up enough to break the plastic.
I bought this attachement for my wife for Christmas 2004. It broke the transmission and stripped the gears on the mixer in January. We removed the cover and saw the cracked plastic. Kitchenaid promptly sent a replacement mixer even though ours was "out of warranty". This tells me that they KNOW about their design flaw.
We got our shiny new Kitchenaid Mixer the next week. My wife took it out of the box, attached the grain mill and started it grinding flour. Within 10 minutes the plastic cover failed on the new one. Kitchenaid sent out a new one, again. We're now on our third mixer and we're looking to get a refund from Kitchenaid for the Grain Mill so we can go out and buy a real wheat grinder.
It's really sad. All Kitchenaid needs to do is put a metal gearbox cover on the transmission and you could grind wheat into flour non-stop. I can't believe that they're willing to stake their good name on a plastic part!

KitchenAid FGA Stand Mixer Attachment, Food Grinder Review

KitchenAid FGA Stand Mixer Attachment, Food Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like to make my own sausage, so this, plus the sausage stuffing attachment, was a great addition to the kitchen.
Some things to make the grinding go easier:
1) Chill the meat cubes in the freezer for 30 minutes or so. If the meat is completely defrosted, it can gum-up the inside a bit (easily resolved). Having the meat cubes a little "stiffer" lets it grind easier.
2) Don't power your mixer up to "10". This is a slower process. I use the max speed or "stir" or maybe as high as a 1 or 2. This keeps the grind even and you won't overheat your mixer.
Cleaning can be a bit of a pain. I unfold a paper clip and use the wire to dig out some of the meat, rinse and then let the dishwasher do the rest.

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Review

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a heavier mixer than the "Artisan" model, and the bowl raises and lowers on a lever rather than the head of the mixer lifting up. If you make heavy breads or a lot of bread for your family, this may be a better choice mixer with the stronger motor.
You can also add a grain grinder to the front of the device--there's a lid that flips up and you insert it into a hole with a positioning pin. The motor then turns the grinder, sausage stuffer or vegetable grater. The grinders work terrific; the vegetable grater/slicer is a variation on those cone slicers and not my favorite attachment. But for a one-stop heavy-duty device that mashes potatoes, kneads bread, whips egg whites, stirs cake batter or grinds wheat flour or rye flour, this can't be beat.

Here's a review I wish I had read prior to buying my KitchenAid:
First, the not-so-good: I bought the stand mixer, model number RKG25HOXER. This type of mixer mimics in design what you see in professional bakeries inasmuch as it has a handle on the side of the mixer that you raise in order to bring the bowl to the beater level. This, in my opinion, is the drawback and I would never consider buying this model again. The level of inconvenience is tremendous and annoying. To be specific, it is very difficult to add ingredients with this design. Imagine you are mixing a batter and you must slowly and gradually add flour. You can't fit a 1/4 cup measuring cup within the bowl circumference (which is very small). To add ingredients, you must stop the machine; lower the bowl; add a the ingredient; raise the bowl; and begin the mixing process. You have to do this as many times as you need to add something to your batter. I couldn't imagine that someone had not thought of a solution for this problem, so I began my research. I found that in order to add ingredients, it is recommended that you purchase a special KitchenAid plastic apparatus that fits the lip of the bowl. This apparatus has a spout or chute in which to add things. I believe KitchenAid calls it a splash guard, but I could be wrong. So, add this $20 to the price of your mixer, because you will need to buy it. The apparatus is not the solution as your ingredients stick to the plastic spout/chute (imagine adding an egg, then having to add a bit more flour). The bottom line with this machine is that the design is NOT convenient.
Now, the good: It's a KitchenAid and you will never find a better motor or quality mixer. I adore the durability! What a less pricey brand would struggle to mix, a KitchenAid simply plows through. Doughs, any batter, kneading, you name it; the machine does it. The optional attachments are quality made (graters, grinders). A KitchenAid will do everything short of birthing your children. While I would never recommend the design I ended up with, I could never recommend anything BUT a KitchenAid. I suggest buying the model where the head of the mixer lifts, just like your Mom's did. If I was a rich woman, I would go out today and buy that model design, but alas, I am stuck with what I am stuck with.
Bottom line: Buy a KitchenAid, do not buy anything else. Buy the head-lift design and you will be happy for life. I wish I had known!

This mixer is absolutely fantastic! The lift mixer is so much better than the stand style mixers in that the stand mixers get worn out and the bowl tends to jump around. I used to work with a stand style mixer and I would have to put all of my weight on the bowl while I was mixing stuff to keep the bowl from flying out into the kitchen! The motor is super powerful and I am very pleased with it. Since I started making everything we eat from scratch it is nice to have this great mixer to save me the labor of hand mixing stiff doughs and such. I noticed other people had problems with it. One person wrote that the bowl didn't stay in place at all, it needs to be snapped in, if you look at the back on the mixer you'll see a strip of metal where the bowl slides into, on the bowl where it meets the mixer is a metal nub, that's where it is supposed to snap in. They also said that they put the attachments in the dishwasher and they changed color. The instructions say to hand wash them ONLY!!!
It was an absolute pleasure just opening the box up that it came in. It came just as the seller described, brand new and shiny red. I look forward to years of use and everyday I admire it in my kitchen!

Attractively housed in durable, die-cast metal, this stand mixer features a high-performance 325-watt motor that produces enough power to handle the heaviest mixtures and mix large batches easily. The unit's 10 speeds range from a very fast whip to a very slow stir, allowing for everything from whipping egg whites to slow churning bread dough, while its Soft Start function helps prevent ingredient splatter and flour clouds by gently accelerating to the selected speed after start-up. To ensure even blending, the appliance creates a unique mixing action that spins the beater clockwise while the shift spins counter clockwise. The mixer provides a 5-quart-capacity brushed-stainless-steel mixing bowl with a contoured handle, as well as a burnished flat beater, a burnished dough hook, a wire whip, and a one-piece pouring shield. Other highlights include a 9-cup flour capacity, direct-drive transmission with all-metal gears, automatic safety shut-off in the event of an obstruction or overloading, and a sturdy lifting mechanism that uses a metal arm and steel lever to effortlessly raise the ingredient-filled mixing bowl. Available in a variety of fashionable colors, the stand mixer measures 13-2/7 by 10-2/5 by 16-2/5 inches and carries a one-year hassle-free replacement warranty.
