I have always had good experiences with Krups, Kitchen Aid, Braun, and Cuisinart products-- in that order. At home, we really enjoy and have had great experiences and reliability from the first two brands in particular.
Many of today's toasters seem more like small ovens, given the amount of wattage output they can deliver. In the case of the toaster, I chose the Krups 4-slice toaster. (The Kitchen Aid was a bit too long for the small amount of counter space that I have in my apartment's kitchen). Both have very wide slots, seemingly designed for bagels and frozen breakfast treats.
I noted that some reviewers had complained that the Krups does not toast evenly. I have used a number of brand name toasters, and one could say the same for all-- especially those with the wider slots.
What I do like about the Krups is that it does do a great job in positioning and holding bread evenly between the heating elements in each slot, which in turn is helpful in evenly toasted bread. Whether the toasting is even depends, I found, on the freshness and size of the bread; also, you should experiment with the heat settings, to determine which is best for you. Larger loaf sizes will bend slightly to one side or the other in the slots; hence, I do not always obtain even toasting of these bread slices.
I am very satisfied with the results that I obtain from the Krups toaster, and recommend it without reservation.

(More customer reviews)KitchenAid hurts its brand name for each day this product is on the market. Here's the good news: The soft rise feature seems to work well for me; toast is easy to remove. The bagel function works well for bagels and hamburger buns. I have to change the darkness setting for different bread types (sandwich slices, buns, bagels, etc.), but I expect that, so it's ok. The digital setting knob is convenient because you don't have to guesstimate the correct setting. The bad news: The thing won't toast consistently. Almost every day, I wake up and load the toaster with two refrigerated bagels (4 sliced halves). It's always a cold start in the morning. I set it to brown on #6. The results range from moderately overdone to no browning at all. There's no excuse for it. As another reviewer has said, it also doesn't cook very evenly with 1 or 3 slices. Evidently, the radiant heat from the opposite side hits only one edge of the single slice and overcooks just that side. If you stick a single slice in the center of the slot, it gets even worse, because both edges will be overdone, while the center is underdone. I have to turn the toaster down one notch if I plan on running a second batch of toast. The Even-Heat System is bogus. I give this toaster an A for effort and an F for execution.

(More customer reviews)Had a serious wake up call this morning. At 6:30am, was awakened by smoke detectors going off. Followed the heavy smoke to the kitchen where our toaster was in full flames, most of the plastic was burning, the cabinets were very hot and dense electrical smell. Was able to unplug the toaster, cord falling apart in my hand, and put the fire out. Counter was ruined, as well as part of the cabinet. No one was around or up at that time. From what I can determine, the toaster just caught flames due to an electrical short in the controls. I am glas I did not go anywhere for the holiday weekend, or I would have come home to a burned out apt. I do not recommend this toaster unless you wish to set fire to the place.

Dualit 4-Slice Toaster Review

(More customer reviews)I have mixed feelings about this item. So much so that I put off reviewing it for a long time. I've owned mine over a year now, and it is time to speak up.
On the one hand, I really want to like it. And not just because I spent a good sized hunk of cash on it. I like the idea of an industrial, commercial-grade toaster that makes great toast, is indestructible, and looks great doing it.
On the other hand, I kind of don't like it. It takes up a lot of space, the slots aren't wide enough for a bagel, or deep enough for a wide piece of bread. I had to buy the optional sandwich cages to allow me to stuff bread into the slots that wouldn't otherwise fit. It needs to be preheated, and even after it is, the toast is inconsistent and uneven.
It does look great on the counter, and feels very heavy-duty. But, it just isn't very good at making toast, and that is supposed to be the point.
Sadly, I don't think I would buy this again.

Shortly before it got here I noticed the review section and read all the horrible reviews for this toaster and became really concerned that the toaster wouldn't work properly. It came about six months ago, I've used it pretty much every day since then and it works just fine. No weird, uneven toast. No sticky handle. None of the scary stuff in the other reviews. Its pretty, and it works. Its a toaster.

(More customer reviews)I have owned this toaster for about two months now and am very pleased with the toast I get from it. It seems to be almost impossible to find a toaster these days that will toast bread evenly and consistently. This one not only does the job, but is also reasonably priced.
I have used the "bagel" setting for English muffins and it works well, toasting just the inside surface of the muffin while warming the crust side. Bread is evenly toasted on both sides. It doesn't matter which slot I use, the toast is consistently the same degree of "brown." Each pair of slots has its own set of controls, so you can toast to different degrees of "brown" at the same time. The "frozen" setting works with frozen bread as it should. In short, this toaster does exactly what it's supposed to.
I have only two criticisms. First, it takes a long time to get the job done. That is ameliorated somewhat by the fact that there are four slots, making it twice as fast as a two-slot toaster. To toast bread to a medium-brown takes about 3:30 (minutes:seconds) on setting number five. The settings go to six, which yields a smoking, almost black, piece of toast after 4:30. If you want your toast truly black, you'll have to use the "frozen" setting.
My other criticism is its size. Check the dimensions and make sure that you can live with them. This toaster is large.
Edit: I have found one more criticism, but it still doesn't affect my opinion that this is an excellent toaster. When the toast pops up, it isn't raised high enough. The toaster will allow you to lift the toast another half-inch or so, but unless you are toasting a full-sized piece of bread (think English muffin) you will not be able to reach it without a tool. This is an annoyance, but I just stab the muffin with my butter knife and pull it out.
All in all, an excellent toaster. I'd buy it again.

(More customer reviews)I am not a toast expert that many seem to be regarding reviews. All I wanted was a toaster that did a good job. First tried a Dualit ($108), and returned it since many of the elements either with not heating equally, or were not lit up at all. Then I tried just a two-slice Kitchen Aid ($70). It worked OK, but the housing was so big, there was almost 2 inches from the front of the toaster to the edge of the toast opening. I returned it too, really wanting a 4 slice. I took a chance on the Sunbeam, have had it for about 3 months, and it toasts very good. I found it toasted the edges better when you laid the bread down, rather than standing it up. I have not tried the bagel option yet. It has consistently toasted the bread the same each time at the same setting. I have been setting it at 4.5. I also like the "interrupt" button just below the setting knob. Just a light touch pops the toast up. I had a previous toaster where I had to push very hard to make it work (sometimes!)

-Consistent Results.
If your partner likes their bagel lightly toasted, and you like yours golden brown, you can both get what you want without any guesswork.
-Digital Readout
There is a digital readout that gives you unambiguous feedback. You can see at all times what darkness you have the toaster set to. It also gives you a little count-down timer so you know how long you have left.
-Cancel button.
You don't have to pry at the handle to cancel your toast. Of course, since you get consistent results, you probably don't have to cancel that often.
-Toast-popup.
If you do pull the handle up, your toast comes up for you to look at it without having to cancel the toasting. Just let go, and the toast drops back down to continue the cycle.
-Audio feedback
It beeps when your toast is done. Sometimes the pop-up sound can be lost over the sound of the coffee machine. The beep is much easier to hear.
-More options I don't use.
There are some more buttons in the front that I've not had to use. Defrost and warm, I think.
I'm very pleased with my new toaster. I like over-engineered devices- devices where someone has thought of nearly everything and found an elegant solution. This toaster doesn't disappoint.
Update, Aug 14, 2009:
After two years of use this toaster is still going strong.

Its also nice looking ... esp. if you have stainless appliances or some stainless handles in your kitchen already. The slanted design really makes this toaster an original. The slanted design seems to make putting toast in and taking it out easier, esp. for kids. Even the buttons are stylish ... and I like how the outer toasting levers align with the inner levers. There are controls on either side and both sides can easily handle a bagel with ease.
There is a good feature to note. The middle push levers ... one for each side. These inner levers are stylish, but have a meaningful purpose, which is to push the toast UP and OUT of the toaster (if needed, if you want to, you don't need to) ... I've never seen a toaster that could do that before! That really is a nice safety / convienience feature ... esp. with smaller bread ... it pushes it up for enough that you don't reach into the toaster at all to retrieve the toast.
It's a big boy ... fairly wide for a toaster ... but worth it because of the quality and speed of the toasting ... and style/originality of the unit.
If I were to try and be more critical, I would say the size could be an issue for those with small kitchens or limited countertop space ... and the slanted design of the unit can on rare occasion launch some lighter toast out of the unit.
But overall, I must give this 5 stars because it does toast and bagels extremely well (no burns yet) and its stylish and original. I would warn that it toasts on a very low setting, so start out with 2 or 3 ... because its fast and powerful ... a higher setting could burn, I would think.

(More customer reviews)I thought this was going to be the perfect toaster. However, once again a toaster misses the mark.
I particularly like the countdown timer, because I always wonder how much longer it will take to toast my bread, but it would be nice if the counters only lit up when the toast control is pushed down. They do make nice night lights in the kitchen, though.
Deficiencies:
1. The slots are wide, but they are short, so thick bread will go in just fine, but not some wider bread types. 12 grain breads in particular tend to be wider, and the slices end up caught on the ends of the slots.
2. The first thing I noticed was that the center elements of the toaster did not get as red as the outside elements. Thus I was worried that the bread would toast darker one side than the other, and that was the case.
3. One side (2 slots) of the toaster refused to work on the third attempt. It would not latch down.
4. I had to set the control to 5.5 (the highest setting is 6) to toast multigrain bread to a medium color. I would guess that a setting of 1 or 2 would just slightly warm the bread.
This toaster seems to be optimized for bagels. I want a toaster that is optimized for toast!
When I was a kid, we had toasters that went tick tick tick, toasted the bread just right and then dinged, and didn't cost much. Why can no one make a decent toaster like that now?

(More customer reviews)I hate toasters, that is to say, I hate toasters that don't... toast. In the past, I have returned new toasters along with toasted samples that show how poorly the product functioned. It has been a curiousity of mine that we can put men on the moon, explore the ocean depths, even perform complex organ transplants; yet man can not create an appliance that will consistently and evenly toast a piece of bread.
Our previous toaster lived a long, albeit, mediocre life. We would have liked to have replaced it with a similar model since our expectations (low) were already molded by the last one, but it had be discontinued which left us on the quest to find another brand. Arghhh!
The search ended with the Breville CT75XL 4 slice toaster. We've had the toaster for about 30 days and have toasted a variety of breads, bagels,and frozen waffles; all to our complete amazement and satisfaction.
The unit's footprint is a bit large but acceptable, yet then most 4 slice toasters tend to be on the behemoth side these days. I'm not sure why the darkness control goes to all the up to 10 as we have found that setting it to 4 seems to be plenty dark enough. The digital display has an integrated timer with segments that blink as the toasting time counts down. When the toast is ready, the toaster will beep just prior to popping up the product.
Now, I'm not a professional product reviewer so I won't go into the nitty-gritty details as to the features. You can read all about them from the manufacturer's website. I just wanted to let those that are interested, that, for one who hates toasters, the Breville has been a pleasant find.

Cuisinart CPT-180 Toaster, 4-Slice Classic Brushed Chrome Review

(More customer reviews)Put in 4 slices of toast and each slice comes up done to a different degree. Worse, for a given piece of bread one side may be done while the other is nowhere close.
When you look down into the 4 slots and see different glow intensities on each of the faces you see why this happens. Another reviewer wrote about getting one bad one, then replacing it with one that worked just fine. I just took back my 3rd one and gave up.
Its looks alone are worth a couple of stars. But I sure wish it worked.

My husband actually picked this one because of reviews he had read on it. I love several of the features on it. You have a defrost cycle for your frozen items that works perfectly on bagels. Then there is the bagel setting that only toasts the inside parts of the bagel, which keeps the crust soft. While I will admit it took several tries to figure out the way to put the bagels in for this feature....once you get it ...you'll love it. I finally have perfect toast, bagels and waffles. I also love to crumb trays....so easy to clean.

(More customer reviews)I bought this lovely toaster because (a) my toaster oven takes about 5 minutes to make toast - and that's its only job (b) my toaster oven is HUGE and SO UGLY! I got fed up with how much space it took up in my pantry and finally decided to splurge on the Dualit. I wanted a toaster that I loved to look at, so I could leave it on the counter without 'shame.' It is beautiful and makes perfect toast in under 60 seconds. It's so good, actually, that I burnt my first try because I had the settings up too high. (Heat scale is 1-9: on a 3, I had perfect toast in less than a minute.) On setting 9 my toast was ... not toast. For those who appreciate well-designed items, I highly recommend that you splurge on this toaster! [For size perspective, the Dualit Lite is the same size as a regular 2-slice toaster. I was afraid it would be too small, but it's just right to keep out all the time.]
