Black & Decker TRO407 Toast-R-Oven 4-Slice Convection Toaster Oven Review

I wanted a basic but reliable toaster oven. An older Black and Decker version we loved finally gave in and I purchased this one after reading one positive review. I absolutely hate this oven. The timer slips and stops clicking but does not turn the over off. It is a fire hazard. A few times the oven kept toasting and I finally noticed the smoke and burning smell. I usually use the "light" or "medium" setting but one of us has to literally stand next to the oven while toasting to manually turn it off. I wish I returned it right away.

Perfect as a second oven or as an energy-efficient alternative to turning on the full-size oven, this countertop appliance offers a large capacity with a curved interior that can fit a 9-inch pizza or toast up to four slices of bread at a time. Use the oven for convection baking (a fan circulates the heat), as well as broiling, toasting, and keeping foods warm until they're ready to be served. The unit features a quartz heating element and 1500 watts of power to ensure fast, professional results, plus it comes with a broiling rack with upper and lower rack slots for added versatility. Three user-friendly control knobs make the oven simple to operate. The top knob adjusts the temperature up to 450 degrees F, the middle knob selects the function (convection bake, broil, toast, or keep warm), and the bottom knob allows for setting the timer up to 60 minutes or choosing continuous "on", as well as selecting the shade setting when toasting bread or bagels. Other highlights include a see-through glass door, a convenient signal bell, and a slide-out crumb tray for quick cleanup. The sleek-looking toaster oven measures approximately 18-2/3 by 11-3/5 by 13-2/3 inches.

Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Broiler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here. Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this model.
I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to use it.
It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread, bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.
Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't anywhere near that close when it was new.
Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven won't gather dust on your countertop.
Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else, this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.

Calphalon HE650CO XL 1400-Watt 0.7-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Convection Oven Review

Calphalon HE650CO XL 1400-Watt 0.7-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Convection Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had very high hopes for this oven. It has the Calphalon name on it. Their PR write up sounds so promising. The warranty is good. The oven is handsome. Too bad it fails as an oven though. I tested this oven thoroughly upon receipt. I knew I had to make sure this was a keeper given the price. Save your money and buy a $60 toaster oven. It is important to share that I never use a 'big' oven. Normal ovens pull 3500 watts. They cost a fortune and the overwhelming majority of people don't need such a cavernous appliance. So I bake a lot and everything in countertop ovens. This oven suffers from bad design flaws. You can only use the middle rack position or you will burn the top or bottom of your food. There is almost no internal clearance for anything but the shallowest casserole dish. If you use the rack in the inverted position facing downwards (it has a 'dip' design to - not flat) and pull the rack out to safely remove the dish, the dish slides at a fast clip right out of the oven - almost lost a dish as it rapidly headed for the floor. This is happening because the rack tips down once you pull it forward enough to safely grasp the hot pan. Now I had to flip the rack and use it in that position due to the excessively low clearance - my small casserole dish wouldn't fit and I couldn't move the rack down lest I burn the food - you see where this circle never ends. This occurred regardless of using a casserole dish or a bake sheet. And the back left quadrant cooks much faster than the rest of the oven. I had to watch the food and rotate the pan - talk about aggravating. The back of the oven is actually angled forward presenting a really strange limitation on what it can really hold. I tested many different types of items in the oven to be as thorough and fair as I possibly could especially since it came in such a large packing box. It is going to be a pain to return but return I must unless I feel like cursing everytime I attempt to use it. I am wondering if the people who designed this ever actually used it? A few design changes and this product wouldn't be such a beast.
Clarification: There is an 'edge' to the rack that, when used with the invert facing upwards will stop any dish from sliding out. But the loss of clear space above means only pans or very shallow dishes can be used. Tried using it in this position in the lowest slots but that was still so close to the lower elements that the bottom of the cinnamon rolls burned. Just want to be specific about the issues faced. I am looking for a counter top oven that does more than just pizza, biscuits, etc.. I believe the enclosed user guide mentioned you could use this oven to cook a chicken. It had better be either a cut up one or a miniature one.

Attractively housed in stainless steel, this convection oven not only looks great on the countertop, it also provides an array of convenient features. The appliance bakes, broils, and toasts, and its large 0.7-cubic-foot capacity can accommodate a 9-by-13-inch pan, a 12-inch pizza, or six slices of bread, bagel halves, or English muffin halves. To toast, simply press the "toast" button and select from "light", "medium", or "dark" shade settings. For baking, turn the temperature control knob to the desired heat setting, ranging from 250 to 450 degrees F, then set the timer up to 60 minutes or choose the "always on" setting for continuous operation. For convection baking, simply push the button and the convection fan circulates warm air around food during the baking cycle for superior browning and even baking or roasting. Or, turn the control knob to "broil" and set the timer; the unit's upper heating element will quickly sear meats or melt cheese on garlic bread. A chime will sound once the timer ticks down to zero, or with the "always on" setting, the unit will shut off automatically after two hours. Other highlights include an Opti-Heat system for premium heating, a glass door for checking on the cooking progress at a glance, a high-performance bronze nonstick interior, and a removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Accessories include a nonstick heavy-gauge 9-by-13-inch baking pan/broil rack and an easy-to-follow instruction book. With its sleek, contoured shape, the 1400-watt convection oven measures 16 by 17-2/3 by 10-2/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Cuisinart BRK-200 Brick Oven Deluxe, Stainless Steel Review

Cuisinart BRK-200 Brick Oven Deluxe, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this beautiful toaster/convection oven to use as a second oven for entertaining/holidays and for everyday use to cook for just the two of us.
First of all, it's darned beautiful to look at. It matches my stainless appliances and looks fabulous on my counter. The controls are very easy to use. It comes with 2 racks (although you're only supposed to use one at a time) and a baking pan/broiler tray. But the best thing is that it comes with a baking stone which sits in one of the racks and the oven itself is lined with baking stone material on either side. The back of the oven has the convection fan. All non-stone surfaces are of nonstick material, which makes it a cinch to clean.
In the month I've had it, I've used this amazing appliance to bake cakes and casseroles, broil shrimp, make pizza, roast tomatoes and chickens and even toast an english muffin! It passed every test with flying colors. The oven is large enough to fit a whole chicken for roasting - and did a great job.
I'd say the weak points are that you have to turn the oven around to get the crumb tray out (a minor inconvenience) and both the crumb tray and the baking pan tend to warp when the oven is hot.
To use the baking stone, you must preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes. Not a problem for me, as I preheated while waiting for my pizza dough to rise. Worked out great.
I'm delighted to give this my highest recommendation.

T-Fal Avante Elite 6 Slice Convection & Toaster Oven with Separate Warming Compartment Review

I like the looks of this oven. I had a Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven that I tossed after two years. Unlike the Cuisinart the T-Fal is easy to clean, it doesn't have an area by the glass-hinged door that is impossible to clean. The crumb tray is accessed from the front of the oven, not the back. Also the T-Fal shuts off when the time on the timer is done. The warming tray is great for warming hot dog buns while broiling hot dogs in the oven. The controls are straight forward and easy to use without having to read the manual. I'm looking forward to many years of good cooking with this oven. If I experience any problems I'll update this review.

I purchased this product and think it is great!. We had a delonghi toaster for a short while, and it never failed to burn toast , bagels or anything else we put in it. It could never regulate the temperature. Would NEVER buy another Delonghi product. This product toasts evenly and perfect, bakes to perfection and rotisseries a small chicken or game hen evenly. .It has a little handle pull for the racks and trays which make removing a pizza or larger items easy, and a full size bottom crumb rack . The rotisserie attachment is easy to insert or remove. Makes toast in a reasonable amount of time. The best part is: it is self-cleaning. I'm happy with it.

Waring Pro WTO150 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Built-In 2-Slice Toaster Review

Waring Pro WTO150 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Built-In 2-Slice Toaster

(More customer reviews)
I've done a ridiculous amount of research on toaster ovens, trying to find a better quality one that does not have a nonstick coating (which releases poisonous gas when heated) on the interior of the oven or on the bake pans. I was very happy to find that the Waring model is nonstick-free. (For those who care, the interior is aluminized steel.) I've had the toaster oven for only a week, but so far it works very well. It has a nice solid, industrial feel to it - nothing feels cheap. The dimensions are actually 19" wide,11" deep, 9" tall - the measurements given in the description are way wrong. My husband and I really like the separate toaster slots on top and use them all the time. The interior of the oven is roomy - enough to fit 4 or 5 baked potatoes or 4 slices of traditional-size bread or 2 slices of oversize sandwich bread. I've used it to bake potatoes, broil bacon, brown a chicken and make toast - everything came out fine. The only complaints I have are really just annoyances. First, you can't use the oven without setting the timer, which I guess is a safety feature, because when the timer goes off the power shuts off. But this means if you want to cook something for a couple hours you need to be on the ball and reset the timer to continue baking. I rarely use it for more than 30 minutes so this is not a real problem for me. Second, the rack and bake pans are a pretty tight fit and when I need to change their position it takes a few seconds to line them up right - once I do they go in smoothly. But I wonder if this will be more of a problem in the future when everything gets a bit sticky and warped. I guess I'm skeptical about toaster ovens after reading so many terrible reviews of different brands and models, but I'm happy so far. I hope this one lasts 15 years like my Black & Decker that just gave out.
5/6/10 Two months later, and we have a small problem. The toaster lever won't stay down anymore if the toast 'doneness' knob isn't turned on just before I try toasting (in other words, I can't just leave it on and set to the shade I want). I'll leave my 4-star rating for now, because it has worked consistently if I start from the off position, then turn the knob on, then toast. But I didn't need to do this before. The oven still works fine and I've had no trouble with slowness, as reported by others. If a cookie recipe says 350 for 9 minutes, that's how long it takes with this oven.

Perfect as a second oven or as an energy-efficient alternative to turning on the full-size oven, this countertop appliance offers a large 0.45-cubic-foot capacity that can accommodate up to four slices of bread at a time. Its user-friendly control panel consists of three knobs. The top knob controls the function--choose from bake, broil, or toast; the middle knob adjusts the temperature up to 450 degrees F; and the bottom knob allows for setting the timer up to 30 minutes, as well as selecting the shade setting when toasting bread. Best of all, the toaster oven features a built-in two-slice toaster, which makes it possible to bake, broil, or toast in the oven while simultaneously toasting bagels, bread, English muffins, frozen waffles, and other favorites in the toaster. The toaster offers a simple lowering lever, its own light to dark shade settings with a "cancel" option, and a "bagel" button for warming the outside while toasting the cut side of bagels. Other highlights include 1500 watts of power, an "on" indicator light, a see-through oven door to monitor the cooking progress, and brushed stainless-steel housing for an attractive addition to any kitchen counter. Euro-Pro TO251 Convection 6-Slice Toaster Oven with Pizza Pan Review

Euro-Pro TO251 Convection 6-Slice Toaster Oven with Pizza Pan

[Update July 10, 2010: Rating downgraded to 3 stars and sinking: broken under warranty. Using their customer service webpage kicks back an email saying to email them, and then emailing them got an email couple of days later to call their 800 number. Haven't had a moment to call them yet but will report back.
As much as I like this thing, the controls have quit functioning, after only 7 months of use (initially stuck on high Grill, then wouldn't turn on). And, for those of us who do not live close to Toronto, warranty service is next to useless, because it costs $37.50 for me to mail it from my location internationally to Toronto, plus $9.95 that they request for return shipping and handling, plus the uncertainty that they will actually repair/replace the thing "if it is found ... to be defective in material or workmanship". I contacted customer service for a better solution (e.g. send me some replacement knob modules), but I don't know if that is possible or feasible -- stay tuned for updates. For the moment I am lowering my rating of this toaster to 3 stars because this is too soon to break, but I really like using it and want to give their customer service a chance, though they haven't yet bothered to respond to me (On June 26 I used their website contact page, and on June 30 I sent them email; and I have been checking my spam folder). I hope we can work out a more reasonable way to repair it. For the moment I've moved my old kenmore back into the kitchen -- it has lasted several years and counting, and was replaced only for cosmetic reasons.]
Original review (4 stars):
I bought this from Sears to replace my dirty ugly (but functional) old Kenmore toaster oven. I am pretty happy with it, but there are a few things about it that are not perfect.
I think this toaster oven is the same as many others out there. If you are shopping for toaster ovens, you will see that there are lots of different models and brands offering pretty much the same configuration of controls and features as this one. I suspect that they are all made in the same factory and just have different body styles and name brands slapped on to them.
Anyway, here are some of the features that I like about it:
- It has a "Stay On" setting, so if I am baking something that will take more than 60 minutes I don't have to keep turning up the timer to keep the oven on.
- It offers different cooking combinations of top heat, bottom heat, both, convection on and off.
- It has a bulge in the back ("pizza bump") so that I can put a 12 inch diameter pizza pan in it (one was in the box, but I prefer a pizza screen). Not counting the bulge, the interior is about 9" x 12". It is 4.75 inches from the rack in lowest position to the top heating elements.
- It came with a second rack so I can heat things on two racks at the same time if I want to.
- The stainless steel body means that I can scrub the body without having to worry about removing color (and it looks good)
A few flaws that made me contemplate returning it:
- The outside gets hotter than my older (Kenmore) toaster oven. I put a grill thermometer on the top, when baking at full temp, the top surface reaches 220, about 20 degrees warmer than my old Kenmore. I looked and there appears to be an air gap between the roof of the oven and the outside top surface, but I could not tell if there is any insulation in there. But that means it gets the kitchen hotter, and it provides a hotter warming shelf (plates now get too hot if left too long). [I have moved my ugly old toaster oven out to my patio, and if it is too hot to bake inside, I will bake out there instead.]
- The temperature dial goes down to 150 degrees, but when I have tested it with various cooking modes, the actual oven temperature didn't go lower than 200 in one cooking mode, and 180 in another one. I had been hoping to use this for things like slow roasting and food drying, but that is too hot.
- At the corners of the glass door, there are little cushions that probably protect the glass door from shock, but they also prevent the glass door from closing the whole way, so there is a gap of about 2.5mm to let the heat out (using more electricity and making the kitchen hotter). I haven't decided if this is a feature (perhaps it was felt that some air flow was needed) or a bug.
- If you pull the rack out more than one inch, the back is no longer supported so the back of the rack falls down, and what you are baking slides down to the back. This is a real design flaw, but I have just gotten used to the annoyance and hardly pull the rack out now.
However, in spite of these flaws, I find that I am really happy with the purchase and have enjoyed using its many functions.
Also, note that the ridiculously huge dimensions given in the Amazon listing (at the time of this writing) are the size of the box, not the toaster oven itself. The toaster oven is 17.75 wide x 10.25 tall x 13.5 deep, not counting little bumpers which stick out of the side and back about a half inch to prevent it being pushed too close to walls.

Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler, Stainless Review

Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler, Stainless
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cuisinart TOB-195 costs a little more than most toaster ovens but it is such a joy to use. Some of the things I like about it:
1. Size. You can fit a 12" pizza in it.
2. Controls below the door. It saves a lot of countertop space.
3. Alarm to let you know when the oven is at the right temperature.
4. Digital temperature setting so you don't have to guess at it.
5. Convection oven feature.
6. Non-stick walls for easy clean-up.
The Cuisinart takes only a few minutes to warm up to the proper temperature, unlike a regular oven which can take several minutes. Pizzas crisp up nicely and my favorite banana bread recipe baked perfectly. I expect to use my Cuisinart more often than my regular oven, except for times when company is over.
I relied on reviews of the previous model, the TOB-175, before purchasing the TOB-195 and must say that Cuisinart has continued their great tradition of creating wonderful kitchen electrics.

Hamilton Beach 31199R Countertop 1.1-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven with Rotisserie Review

Hamilton Beach 31199R Countertop 1.1-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven with Rotisserie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before buying this particular oven, I read as many product reviews as could be found. They were for a similar Hamilton Beach Oven but not this exact one. And many were quite negative. But it seemed to be just what I wanted. This would be my third countertop oven. The first one lasted over 25 years. The second one, only about 8 years. It arrived earlier than predicted, always a plus. I burned every single thing I put in it for the first week. Not the oven's fault. I'm laughing as I write this. It is so efficient and works so well and I forgot the times on the previous oven were due to it's "dying" process. So, didn't think to compensate for a "new" oven. Well, now I'm doing much better and things are marvelous from this little jewel. Cookies, main dishes, heating up sauces quickly, (I just moved, gave away my microwave and decided not to buy another), sandwiches, even toast from atisan breads are perfectly cooked. So all the burnt foods were obviously "operator error".
At first, I worried what oven ware would fit into it but no worries. I now have a very tall stack of things that will fit comfortably in this oven including several 12-inch glass baking dishes for pizza and cookies. I only had to buy cookie sheets as all the rest (bread pans, muffin tins, springform cake pan, angelfood cake pan, etc) all fit inside very nicely. And best of all, the really large and oversized items can be given away, taking up less storage space in a space-challenged apt.
I would buy this oven again and again. It's the best. Oh, yes, the "bell" rings at the completion of cooking times and I can hear it in the most distant places of this apt. We've had really hot weather this summer and I've so appreciated only having to heat the kitchen for very few minutes to cook meals then a very quick cool down afterwards. I've not even turned on the large stove/oven that is built in to this apt. And I don't plan to, either. This oven is all I need. Oh, yes, I've been using it since the end of July 2007 - slightly under a month and with daily usage.

For everything from cooking a 5-pound chicken to baking two 12-inch pizzas or a birthday cake, this extra-large 1.1-cubic-foot countertop oven makes it possible to cook whole meals without turning on the full-size oven. Three simple-to-use control knobs allow for setting the temperature; for choosing the function--broil, convection, bake, or rotisserie; and for turning the unit off or selecting the cook time or "continuous on". Its convection method continuously circulates heated air around food, resulting in even heating and 33-percent faster cooking times than a traditional oven. Hamilton Beach 22708 Toastation 2-Slice Toaster and Mini Oven, Black Review

When our beloved 30 year old (from dorm days!) toaster oven died, we thought we'd go buy one just like it -- basic, small, good at toasting, yet usable as a small oven. Alas, nobody seemed to make anything like it. They tended to be larger, and didn't do a good job toasting bread.
After reading lost of discouraging reviews and trying a couple of toaster ovens, we had just about given up, when we saw the Toastation. What a great little unit! Makes great toast, nice and fast like a toaster should (through a slot in the top). Then flip a switch, and the top slot closes and it turns into a nice little oven.
It doesn't hog the whole counter (outside dimensions: 15" wide, 7 1/2 deep, and 8 high). The inside of the oven is small (6 1/2" deep by 10 1/2" wide by 2" high), so don't plan on baking pizza in it.

Save on counter space with this two-in-one appliance. The unit functions as both a traditional toaster and as a toaster oven. As a toaster, it provides a 1-1/2-inch-wide toasting slot that can fit up to two slices of bread, two frozen waffles, or two halves of a bagel or English muffin. Simply drop in the item to be toasted, adjust the shade setting by turning the control knob, and push down the lever on the side. A convenient "cancel" button stops the toasting at any time. Easily switch from the toaster function to the oven by sliding the function lever on the front of the unit. This will seal the toaster slot and trap in the heat. The oven provides a temperature-control knob for just the right amount of heat, and its spacious interior will accommodate chicken nuggets, French fries, two 16-inch pizza slices, or two 5-inch single-serve pizzas. Other thoughtful details include automatic shutoff for safety, a removable crumb tray for quick cleanup, and a sleek, stylish look in a compact design. The two-slice toaster and oven combination unit measures approximately 17 by 9 by 9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.Product is model number 22708, but may be listed as 22708H.

I love my stone in my conventional oven but for a small batch of rolls or a small pizza the toaster oven stone is wonderful.

My husband said he needed a toaster oven for his work so I told him to take ours and I'd buy a new one. (yay!) I went shopping all around town looking at different models... wasn't too impressed with what I saw. The few I DID like I came home to read horror reviews about on amazon. I finally found this one and I believe all the possitive reviews are right. This warms up quickly and toasts perfectly. It looks very nice and seems to be excellent quality. Its very easy to use and I LOVE the touch buttons and digital display. Within minutes of plugging it in I successfully toasted half a frozen bagel as an experiment/snack and it was toasted perfection!! The options are very handy and work great. For the Bagel I just pressed toast-defrost-bagel and selected the darkness setting. I realize now that my old toaster oven was drying food out and heated unevenly. I have also cooked a pizza in it and it was done quickly and evenly also. The only complaint is what was mentioned about having to be careful not to touch it when it's hot. The handle doesn't seem to get hot but just behind it on the metal it does. It is possible you could be burned that way, I did jerk my hand back once on casually opening the door(and I have small hands). That doesn't deter me from loving this toaster oven but I will be careful when it gets very hot. My husband wants to take this one to his work... I said no way! :) With Amazons good price and free shipping its well worth it!

Hamilton Beach 6-Slice Toaster Oven Review

I bought this oven about a year ago and I use it several times a week. It's a little slower than a standard toaster, but that's always the case for toaster ovens, and it seems on par in its own arena. It's a good bit roomier than the Black&Decker ovens I had previously used, and it seems sturdier as well. Additionally, it doesn't cut off when the door is open, which I see as a feature, but some might dislike for safety reasons. Timer and power are consistent. The crumb tray is removable, and it comes with a single shelf, a pan, and a grille for the pan.
