S/S Spice Container Review

S/S Spice Container
Average Reviews:

I recently ordered these spice tins -- 4 sets. What I received was 4 tins. When you look at this set and read the description, "12 pc s/s spice tins," you think you are getting a set of 4 tins per order, right? Wrong. I got one tin per order. Someone must have done a poor job describing this item, because it is not the set pictured nor described. The tins are nice, but they are a push on/off lid that I'm afraid will soon loosen. I wish they were screw on/off instead. The shipping was so costly that I kept them, but I am going to make some noise about this order.

Unfortunately, I've ordered more than my share of FoodSaver products, having bought into the philosophy of vacuum storage, despite reading ample warnings from discontented consumers.
What many of them claim is very much to the point: plastic containers frequently develop cracks and loss of vacuum. I've had many of their marinators and storage canisters prove defective after less than 10 uses. It seems to be related to the material properties and container size characteristics. The smaller containers seem to last longer. Those with thick walls relative to the specified volume or reinforcing structures seem to last just a bit longer.
In plain language, the plastic containers are unreliable. FoodSaver should develop materials and designs that can handle the stress of the vacuum cycling placed on them, or quit the the business. Since their products have been on the market for many years, I can only assume they are more interested in recruiting new customers than satisfying existing customers. If you like filling out warranty forms every few weeks, more power to you.
Bottle sealers are equally worthless. Every one that I bought lost vacuum in short order. In one case, a defective seal resulted in a spill of cooking oil that damaged a nylon tent and other camping gear.
FoodSaver has done a good job with certain items in their product line. The vacuum unit is well designed and performs reliably, as long as the instuctions are followed. The bagging system is unassailable, even though the cost of the bags and rolls is quite high (read Consumer Reports reviews). And, to be fair, their Universal lids are excellent. Use them to seal small glass jars or stainless steel bowls, and there is no loss of vacuum due to cracked plastic.
Bottom line? Be careful which products you buy. Some are excellent, while others are pure junk.

I bought this on QVC a year or more ago and I love it. Its great to bring a cake, cupcakes, or whatever to wherever you are going while also keeping it in tact. Mine has a tray on the bottom so im assuming this one does but i dont see it in the picture. I also use this to store the baked items i have made so they will keep fresh. I love lock & locks. I must have 15 sets or so. I'm hooked.

Oxo Good Grips POP Storage Containers Review

Oxo Good Grips POP Storage Containers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overview:
I have purchased many of these storage containers, in various sizes. As with most OXO products, I have been extremely satisfied with them, and I would buy them again. More importantly, my wife appears to be equally impressed with her gift.
That being said, I don't think they would work as well for everyone, as they do for us. They are expensive, and they are not necessarily the best choice for a home with small children. As such, I will provide you with my observations, and leave it up to you to decide how they would fit into your personal lifestyle.
The pros:
They seal flawlessly, and with great ease. I believe they are the best product available for keeping the freshness in, and the bugs out. They stack nicely, and their clear siding permits easy identification of the contents within. Their rounded corners make pouring a breeze.
These containers come in a variety of sizes, and meet all of our kitchen dry-storage needs. They work for everything from baking goods, to cereals and crackers, to bread. Yes, the two largest container sizes can hold a normal-sized loaf of bread, and keep it fresh for much longer.
They have really helped organize the pantry, which looks great, and makes it much easier to evaluate how much of a product requires replentishment, prior to shopping.
The cons:
First, many of them (especially the larger sizes) are not packaged well for shipping, and they have arrived in broken condition. Fortunately, Amazon Customer Service has promptly replaced them, without delay. To me, the long-term convenience far outweighs the short-term frustration.
Second, we have not broken any of them after delivery, but we are also quite careful in their handling. I'm not sure how well they would do with small children, so be advised before you invest. I suspect a single drop on the hard kitchen floor would result in a damaged container, but I am not willing to test my hypothesis at this price.
Third, they are not dishwasher safe, except for the silicon sealing ring. For us, this has not been a major issue, but it may be a problem for others. Personally, we have found their non-pourous construction to be easy to clean, so we don't mind hand washing them.
Pre-purchase planning:
Be aware that for stacking purposes, the containers come in three shapes (from the top view): small-square shape, large-square shape, and rectangular shape. While you can sometimes mix them for stacking, in general, I find that it is best to stick to one shape (for a particular stack).
Also, be aware that you get more bang-for-the-buck with the larger sizes. The relationship between the price of the container and the volume of storage is indirect. In short, less storage costs you more money.
In general, I find the large-square shape and the rectangular shape to be the most beneficial. They permit easy access, and they allow the buyer more options regarding what to put in them. That being said, understand that the prepackaged sets tend to come with a lot of the small-square shaped containers.
The smallest sizes have limited functionality, but can be useful for storing raisons, small candies, etc. As for the spices mentioned by the manufacturer, spices usually come in a bottle. For those that don't, I believe there are better (and cheaper) products available.
Summary:
For those willing to deal with the shipping issues, the risk of future breakage, and the hand-washing, I think this is by far the best product on the market. With care, they will save you money in the long-run because: they keep things fresh, they keep the bugs out, and they make it easy to avoid the over-buying or the under-buying of groceries. They are a quality product, and they make the kitchen look great.
Whether you want to buy many of them or just a few, I generally recommend the larger sizes. They provide the best bang-for-the-buck, and permit greater flexibility. Specifically, I would start with a few of the large-square types to see if you like them as much as I do.
Thank you for those who posted before me. Much of what I have said consolidates what you mentioned before, and really helped with my purchasing decisions. For those of you still stuck in the decision-making process; good luck! I hope this helps out a little.

This item appears in the picture to be larger then it actually is. I bought it originally planning to store two 5 lb bags of flour in it ... however it only ended up being large enough for one 5 pound bag of flour. i will have to find something else to use this piece for, most likely a cookie jar as i neede one of those as well.
Watch out with this line as the sizes listed i.e 21.1 cups seem like alot but typically are less then you expect.

I've had this product for a few months now. It is nicely constructed and works well. However, some of the top slats have warped slightly, so the cutting surface is no longer even. Occasionally this makes it hard to completely cut through the bread at the bottom.

Adjustable Bread Keeper Review

Adjustable Bread Keeper
Average Reviews:

The breadkeeper (as seen on TV) is plastic and originally arrived cracked. It wasn't very well packaged. I requested an received info to return it, and it was replaced within about 2 weeks, well packaged. It's an OK breadkeeper/slicer guide, but I'm not thrilled with it. I bake my own bread, no preservatives, and it doesn't keep it as fresh as my breadsack. I do use the slicer guide that came with it to slice more evenly, and not thin on top and thick at the bottom or vice versa. For the cost, it's an OK deal. And the service was good.
